Aims of the Management Plan

The primary aims of the management plan are:
  • To maintain, enhance and where necessary restore the natural environment and wilderness character of the gorge landscape wi thin the park boundaries.
  • Facilitate the recreational use of the park in a manner that maintains its environmental values and enhances public appreci ation of these values.
  • To recognise the cultural and historic significance of the park.
These aims will be achieved by:
  • Managing the park according to the aims and provisions of the Reserves Act 1977 and in particular Section 19 (1) (a) and (b ) - Scenic Reserves.
  • Managing the park as a significant conservation site and landscape feature of the Wellington District.
  • Encouraging natural regeneration and replanting using species indigenous to the area, with particular consideration to enco uraging a greater variety of native birdlife.
  • Controlling or eliminating noxious weeds and inappropriate adventive species.
  • Encouraging the improvement of water quality in the Kaiwharawhara and Korimako Streams and the enhancement of freshwater ha bitat.
  • Facilitating the recreational use and development of the park in a manner that maintains the natural environment of the par k.
  • Promoting an awareness of the environmental, historic and cultural features of the park through interpreting them in an app ropriate manner.
  • Ensuring where possible that adjacent areas are managed in a way that protects park values and if appropriate acquiring suc h areas for addition to the park.
  • Making provision for service and utility infrastructure where this cannot be located elsewhere and ensuring that the impact s on natural, recreational, landscape and cultural values are minimised where practicable.
