MANAGEMENT PLAN

Recreation and Public Use Policy

Walking for pleasure is the main recreational activity within the park. Policies will be directed towards maintaining the informal and passive use of the park whilst maintaining and enhancing the wil derness character of the area. While the park is currently not used extensively its popularity is expected to increase as access and walkways along with impro ved water quality in the streams within the park and the gorge are upgraded.

Policies

  1. Recreational management and development will be appropriate to the Scenic Reserve classification under Section 19 (1)(a ) and (b) of the Reserves Act 1977.
  2. Freedom of entry and access to the park shall be maintained subject to such conditions and restrictions considered by the C ulture and Recreation Division for the protection of the area and/or the public. See Access Policy 4. which prohibits vehicle access by the public.
  3. Events and activities which utilise the park's features and which are in the public interest shall be encouraged provided t hey do not conflict with the informal public use and enjoyment of the area.
  4. Commercial use or concessions within the park shall generally not be permitted. Uses or concessions which are based on the scenic and natural character of the area and which enhance the public use or enjoyme nt of the park will be considered on their individual merits and where applicable, the Council's forthcoming Leases and Licence s Policy.
  5. Culture and Recreation Division on application may from time to time allow vehicle access on the service road to enable the elderly and disabled to enjoy that part of the park. In this regard the Culture and Recreation Division may from time to time allow restricted vehicle access from Ngaio Gorge Road into the park.
