Significance

Because of the natural values it protects Trelissick Park is a key feature of the Kaiwharawhara/Korimako Stream catchment.

In a regional wildlife study carried out by Parish in 1983, Ngaio Gorge was identified as a potential SSWI (Site of Special Wil dlife Interest). This classification was confirmed in the 1984 study of the Biological Resources of the Wellington Region. Both studies identified and confirmed the area's potential as a bird corridor between the Harbour and Otari Native Botanic Garden.

The Wellington Branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society has also identified Trelissick Park as a significant ecol ogical site (Natural Wellington, A Plan to Preserve and Enhance the Natural Treasures of Wellington City -undated). The area's diversity in terms of species and habitat as well as the areas potential as a bird corridor were identified as being of particular significance.

Trelissick Park is zoned Open Space C in the Wellington City Transitional District Plan (current) being regarded as a link in t he Outer Town Belt. It is also identified in the Wellington City Draft District Plan as being one of the Conservation Sites or zones within the cit y. These areas represent a cross section of ecosystems and are defined as areas that are a significant part of Wellington's natura l heritage. Trelissick Park also protects the elements of land and forest which are essential to the Maori wairua or sense of well-being. The forest contains plants used in Maori medicine.
