MANAGEMENT PLAN
Vegetation Policy
Vegetation management is a priority issue within Trelissick
Park. Policies directed at the control and eradication of
adventive weeds and noxious animals will have a high priority
along with re vegetation using appropriate indigenous species.
Exotic nurse species such as tree lucerne may be appropriate
in certain circumstances to meet specific management requirements.
The overall replanting objective is to create and maintain
a "natural" appearing vegetation pattern. The cosmetic or
ornamental planting of native species is not an objective.
Policies:
- Existing indigenous vegetation shall be protected
and regeneration encouraged. Revegetation programmes
using indigenous species appropriate to the area (and
where possible propagating from known local sourc e
material) will be continued to supplement natural regeneration.
- The health and vigour of the native forest and the
pattern of regeneration shall be monitored. Management
practices and use shall be modified if it is shown that
these are adversely impacting on the forest.
- Long term management programmes shall be established
to control and where appropriate eradicate adventive
plants and animal pests. (Note that possum impacts on
the vegetation of Trelissick Park are currently considered
to be low and control operations are no t recommended
at present).
- The Trelissick Park/Ngaio Gorge Working Group and
other organisations who have an active interest in the
park shall be enco uraged to assist with planting and
vegetation management.
- All planting and vegetation management programmes
shall be approved and if required supervised by the
Culture and Recreatio n Division.
- Revegetation priority shall be given to :
- revegetation of areas cleared of noxious plants;
- the revegetation of disturbed areas;
- riparian land management;
- Where appropriate small areas of grass will be managed
and maintained to prevent the spread of noxious plants
and to provid e open space contrast to the forest.
- Appropriate fire protection measures shall be investigated
and a fire protection plan maintained.
